Distro Annual Winter Funds Drive 2024

Luther – Annual Winter Funds Drive
Current: Luther Giving » Billing » Review » Finish

Free Weekly Distro (“Distro”) is a collaboration between MLU and LSPIRG, intended to combat food insecurity among post-secondary students. Each Thursday afternoon, students are able to drop in and choose what they need from the Distro market. Access to fresh, nutritious food is important to us. Our team of volunteers, staff, and off-campus partners have fostered an immense sense of community and belonging. We believe the intentional decisions we have made around choice, equity, climate, and mutual aid challenge the current common food assistance models. The feedback we have received from students is that, above all, they feel cared for

All donations will be matched one for one

during our Winter Support Drive (Jan 27 - Feb 29)

(to a maximum of $10,000)

What is food insecurity?

Food insecurity is the inability to obtain an adequate quantity/quality of food due to physical, social, and/or financial constraints. It can look like worrying about running out of food; eating less and/or poorer quality foods; or going a full day(s) without eating. It can be experienced short or long term.

Community building

Distro relies on grants, donations and food drives to support these students. While we welcome food donations, funds allow us to purchase specific high demand foods, prioritizing fresh produce.

Matthew MacGregor Fund

The January drives began in honour of Matthew MacGregor, a remarkable young man who died in March 2020, at age 21. Matthew was an individual with a gift for human connection, possessing the ability to build relationships and nurture community, bringing people together with his infectious smile.

Happy Birthday, Matthew

Matthew's family has been involved with Distro since its early days.  This birthday tradition has collected hundreds of pounds of food and raised thousands of dollars in support of insecure students.

Small but mighty

With limited resources we're not generally able to take advantage of bulk pricing, so we shop the weekly sales like everyone else.  This can make for a convoluted drive as we try to maximise our dollars.

Line-ups start early

Distro runs each Thursday from 1:30-5:30.   By 12:30, students have started lining up.  When the doors open at 1:30, the line up is down the hall.  Approximately 200 students visit the program each week. A recent survey indicates that 20% of them rely on Distro for all of their groceries.

Pay it forward

By making a donation to Disto, you help fight insecurity by providing groceries for around 200 students weekly, supporting a responsive, volunteer-driven program that makes an immediate positive impact.

“Distro has always been an amazing resource for me, when I was at my lowest.  There was a time where I felt I had nowhere to turn to and I remembered that Thursday was around the corner.  Without Distro I don’t think I could maintain my ability to complete my education.  Food is less of a worry, the staff is always friendly and bring such positivity to my low points…” – Student, 2022
