Honouring Dr. Glen Carruthers
The Wilfrid Laurier University community honours and celebrates the life and work of Dr. Glen Carruthers, former dean of the Faculty of Music. Dr. Carruthers died from cancer on Dec. 24, 2020. He was 66.
Dr. Carruthers was the driving force behind the Making Space for Music campaign, and donors have come together in tribute to him through the naming of the Carruthers Practice Studios. Over 250 donors met and surpassed the campaign goal of $750,000 to raise over $770,000 in under three months.
This would not have been possible without a matching gift* in December 2020 from long-time Laurier champions Robert (LLD '96) and Judith (BA '87) Astley, and a significant gift of Laurier Chancellor Eileen Mercier (BA ‘68, LLD ‘13).
The beautiful, new Carruthers Practice Studios will create a bank of high-quality, light-filled practice and rehearsal rooms with superb acoustics. Each room will have floor-to-ceiling windows with a view onto University Avenue. The naming of the Carruthers Practice Studios is a fitting honour for a true leader who loved nothing more than to hear music – and friendships – being made. It will be a place where Laurier music – and Dr. Carruthers’ legacy – will resonate for generations to come.
*up to $375,000 and contingent on the building construction commencing by July 31, 2022. All funds donated to the Carruthers Practice Studios will go toward Laurier's ongoing Making Space for Music capital campaign to support the building in which the Carruthers Practice Studios will be situated.
